Things of Interest

The history of the Roebuck Bay Hotel begins as a tin shed in the late 1880's, when even then it sat in the heart of Chinatown amongst the vendors and workers of the thriving pearling industry. The hotel has survived over 112 years of trading, giving us the honour of being the largest and longest running hotel in Broome.
In fact, the National Trust classified the hotel as being "of environmental importance"... "The Roebuck Hotel is legendary, and has always been a social and cultural point in Broome".
The original hotel, situated where the 'Branding Iron' TAB Bar is now located, has survived the long test of time, with the facade of the hotel being maintained as it was over 50 years ago.
On November 11th, 1990, the Roebuck celebrated its 100th birthday with weeklong festivities. There are some snapshots available in the Picture Gallery.
Almost as famous as the hotel itself are some of its personalities, including Mike Windle (General Manager), Pat Hagan (manager of the bottleshop) and the infamous Cheffy, apptly titled, as he is our brilliant resident chef.
